Install Using APT

On Ubuntu, Debian and any other distribution using APT, you can use the Greyhole APT repository to install and keep Greyhole up to date.
Add the Greyhole APT repository to your APT config, import the GPG public key, then use apt-get to install or update Greyhole (the same apt-get command, install, will install and update Greyhole later):

sudo sh -c 'echo "deb http://www.greyhole.net/releases/deb stable main" > /etc/apt/sources.list.d/greyhole.list'
curl -s http://www.greyhole.net/releases/deb/greyhole-debsig.asc | sudo apt-key add -
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install greyhole

Then follow the instructions from the USAGE file. (There is also a copy of this file in /usr/share/greyhole/USAGE.)

Install Using YUM

On Fedora, CentOS and any other distribution using YUM, you can use the Greyhole YUM repository to install and keep Greyhole up to date.
Download greyhole.repo as /etc/yum.repos.d/greyhole.repo, and then use yum to install or update Greyhole:

sudo curl -o /etc/yum.repos.d/greyhole.repo http://www.greyhole.net/releases/rpm/greyhole.repo
sudo yum install greyhole
sudo yum update greyhole # To update, later on

Then follow the instructions from the USAGE file. (There is also a copy of this file in /usr/share/greyhole/USAGE.)

Other Linux - Install Manually

Just download the latest .tar.gz file (using the green button).
Then follow the instructions from the INSTALL file.

Virtual Machine Appliances

Greyhole is available as a virtual machine appliance, if you’d like to test Greyhole before installing it yourself on your own server.
Different Virtual Machines are available, depending on what OS you’d like to test with.

Download the VM in OVA format (compatible with VMWare & VirtualBox)
Linux & Samba user
    Username: gh
    Password: gh
Root password: gh
gh user also has sudo access.

To update to the latest Greyhole version, simply login (SSH or directly) with the gh user; apt-get or yum will be triggered automatically on login, and install the latest version, if a new one is available.

The Greyhole pool contains 3 x 2GB drives, mounted as /mnt/hdd[0-2].
Three shares are defined: RandomStuff, which will create only one copy per file; NiceStuff, which will create 2 copies per file, and VeryImportantStuff, which will create 3 copies per file (or more if there are more hard-drives connected).
